Ways to Exercise Your Dog Without a Fenced in Yard

We’ve always gone by the motto, a tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Exercise is a great thing for dogs and helps them thrive. Many dog owners live in places that lack fenced in yards which can make exercising their dogs difficult. If you live in a place like this, it is still possible to have a dog and exercise them. This week we’re going to give you some ways to exercise your dog without a fenced in yard.

Ways to Exercise Your Dog Without a Fenced in Yard

Bring your pup to the dog park.

If your dog is comfortable with other canines, a dog park can be a great place for exercise and socialization. As long as the other dogs are well behaved and yours isn’t stressed, you can let your dog run free to play and expend some energy. Dog parks tend to be the busiest during weekday afternoons and weekends. If your dog prefers the company of smaller groups of dogs, you may want to go when the park is quieter.

Bring your dog to daycare.

The dog and puppies that attend our training day camp and daycare all have something in common, they go home tired. If you work during the day and live somewhere that doesn’t have a yard, puppy or dog daycare is a great idea. At The Perfect Pup, our daycare programs focus on exercise, training, and mental stimulation. They are full supervised with naptime and potty breaks.

Walk, jog, or run with your dog.

This is the easiest way to exercise your dog without a fenced in yard. If your dog is new to walking, you’ll want to keep the walks short, twenty minutes should be sufficient at first. After that, you can increase the time gradually. Once your dog is used to the walking, you can change the routine to running or jogging. Don’t push your dog too much at first when starting the jogging. Dogs should only jog with you if they are over a year old and in good health.

Let them play games with their noses.

Besides giving a dog exercise, scenting games are also a great way to stimulate a dog mentally. You can hide their favorite treats in little boxes around the house and leave a scent trail that your dog has to follow to find them. It is up to you how many things you want to hide and as your dog gets used to the game, you can start making the boxes harder to find.
